Job Description:

Renovation Alliance, a local non-profit specializing in providing free home repairs for low-income homeowners, seeks an organized, patient, energetic hard worker with a passion for helping others to be our Project Specialist.  The Project Specialist will coordinate and manage some program and construction operations, aid with planning and overseeing annual volunteer events, perform light construction duties, serve as the volunteer coordinator, and plan and manage special projects throughout the year. The Project Specialist will review homes of applicants, prepare detailed work write-ups and material lists; perform hands-on home repair services or be willing to learn how to perform such work; coordinate environmental and historic reviews and obtain permits; review and evaluate projects upon completion; and serve as liaison to and work closely with RA contractors, partners, and volunteers. The Project Specialist will work at Renovation Alliance’s office in Roanoke and in the field in the city and surrounding counties. The Project Specialist will be exposed to all aspects of non-profit construction and program and project management. General hours of service are Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm, but with flexible schedules as required.  Several weekends required throughout the year.  Background check required.

Characteristic Functions and Duties:

Project Review Duties:

  • Conduct on-site reviews of  homes of applicants on the waiting list for Year Round Special  and Renovation Day projects
  • Prepare detailed work write –ups and material lists

Construction Management Duties:

  • Conduct minor repairs and lead volunteer projects
  • Assign work to work groups or contractors as appropriate
  • Schedule necessary items prior to project date (scaffolding, windows, dumpsters, toilets, etc.)
  • Ensure that groups are trained in Lead Safe Work Practices and are utilized as required
  • Obtain necessary permits, historic and environmental approvals

Project Implementation Duties:

  • Schedule projects and coordinate projects with RA partners as needed
  • Review and manage projects to completion
  • Evaluate completed projects

Miscellaneous Duties (shared):

  • Application intake and eligibility checks as needed. Processing of income information and homeowner verifications
  • Community outreach coordination and efforts
  • Grant writing support as needed
  • Computer Data Entry and Communications (including answering phones)
